What to Expect

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is a gold-standard intervention that strengthens the relationship between parent and child while helping reduce challenging child behaviours. School PCIT brings this evidence-based program directly into your child’s school setting, making it more accessible for families.

Grandmother, Warwick Farm Public School

“We wouldn't be where we are today without PCIT. It was hard at times, but we  could see the changes each week and my

granddaughter has come so far. She  now shows affection and hugs to her younger

sister, which she would never have  done previously. We are very grateful for PCIT”

Teacher, Robert Townson Public School

“The PCIT professionals are very calm and  straightforward, they give consistent and guided  instructions to model proven strategies.

In the classroom, students who have been

partaking in the PCIT program show increased

desired behaviour, are more responsive and show an  increased compliance with requests.

PCIT is a very helpful and effective program that  shows promising results”

Here’s how it works:

  • Step 1: Intake & Assessment
Parents complete a short questionnaire about their child’s behaviour, either online or on paper, to determine eligibility for School PCIT. Teachers may also support this process. If eligible, families are invited to complete a comprehensive assessment at one of our clinics with one of our trained therapists to better understand the child and family’s needs.

  • Step 2: Weekly Therapy Sessions
Parent(s) and child meet with a trained therapist for 1 hour weekly sessions, either onsite at the School PCIT clinic or via secure telehealth. The first session will be the parent(s) alone, without the child. Sessions are typically scheduled between 9am and 5pm. When sessions are attended during school hours, they are fully supported by the school and do not count as absences.

  • Step 3: Live Coaching
During weekly sessions, you’ll receive live coaching from a trained therapist who is behind a one-way mirror via a discreet earpiece you wear while playing with your child. The therapist observes you and your child and provides guidance in real-time, helping you practise strategies right away.

  • Step 4: Progress Review & Graduation
Therapy runs for around 21 weeks, giving you plenty of time to practise new strategies with your child. You’ll complete follow-up assessments and check-in phone calls so we can track the positive improvements at home and school.
